In the beginning of this year, I had promised myself that I would write a short story every month. In the same period, I also started competing in writing competitions. One of these competitions got me something tangible: writing lessons.
This short story is the first time I’m trying to put the lessons I’m learning into use. The style may be a little different than I’m used to, so let me know what you think!
The world of Tortured Artist (definitely a working title) has been in my head for a while. Which world isn’t? It started out as a shameless self insert, for it is a world in which creativity brings out magic. Some people can use this magic and a hidden society has formed around these people. Writers and artists summon, musicians and dancers generate power, and so forth. The applications are thousandfold.
Unfortunately, a story without villain is no good. As I try to use these short stories to practice and try new things, this is one of these stories. The villain origin story is a classic, after all, so it felt nice to use this as an introduction to the world. Even for me, this was an experience, after all.
Follow Ray Miller as he deals with teachers, friends, and foes alike. He will be surprised by what is to find him and what is to meet him. Will he come out the same as he goes into this story?
Read the story itself, or download it as .pdf or .epub here!
